When will 'A Method For Madness' be completed?

I hope to finish it this year. 2011. Really.

Why is it taking so long?

Good question. All I can say is, I'm probably more impatient than you are.

Some people say that you've lost interest.
Some people say that you have a writer's block.
Some people say that you don't care any more.

Some people say that alien space lizards are beaming messages into the brains of our senators. So what? Just because people say it, doesn't make it so.

It isn't nature that abhors a vacuum, it's the human mind. When people have no facts, no evidence, they can't stand it, so they make stuff up. That way they don't have to deal with the embarrassment of having to say, "I don't know." I think it takes real courage to say "I don't know." And then you follow that sentence with "Let's find out." I think research is fun.

But you still didn't answer the question. Why is it taking so long?

I don't know.

So...let's find out.

Okay, the serious answer is this. I never discuss the details of any unfinished book. I never discuss the details of my personal life. That's the best answer anyone is going to get

To be fair, I won't ask you any questions about your work or your personal life either. Okay?

Just answer one thing then. Is there a problem?

I don't think so. Maybe that's the problem. That I don't think so.

I know what scenes and sequences still need to be written, I know how they have to be written. And some of them will be very uncomfortable scenes to write.

But also, I keep discovering new things about the Chtorran ecology, I want to work them all in, and I want to keep everything consistent, well-structured, and exciting. It's hard work.

Do you mind fans asking about the books?

Not at all. I'm happy that people still want to read the next book. It's better than being forgotten. In all the years, only one person has ever truly pissed me off. That's the guy who suggested I hire a ghost writer to finish the series. Maybe he'd be satisfied with a second-rate book. I wouldn't.

Can you give me a little hope?

Yes. There's a big surprise in the works. It's my favorite kind of surprise. It will please some people, perplex others, and probably piss off a few as well. I can hardly wait.

Will there ever be a movie or a TV series based on The War Against The Chtorr?

There's nothing in the works. At this time, I still hold all the rights.

Solomon Short

I stopped reading dystopic novels a long time ago.  If I want bleakness and despair, I can look at my checkbook.

A person's first reaction to anything is always going to be personal. We're hard-wired that way. If I tell you that the sun will burn out in five billion years, your first reaction will be, "What's in it for me?"

A lot of people think they're butterflies, but they're really just caterpillars with delusions.
